On November 22, 2009 an incident in the West has many people talking about the usage of online profiles that induce the activities of the children today. In Los Angeles, California at A.E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas, a 12 year old redheaded boy was beaten in two cases which was thought to be due to a Facebook group called “Kick a Ginger Day,” inspired by an episode of South Park. Television does affect the world today with the types of television shows being aired, but the heavily new addiction of Facebook has swept across our Nation and has exposed all sorts of new activities and possibilities in the world of Facebook. Neither less, Facebook has not had a great impact on the world today. Not only having a certain “activity” leading to Facebook being unreliable and unsafe but also anything you post of Facebook, is not private what so ever. Facebook just has not had a word of greatness added to its name due to simple things being taken to a whole new level.

Facebook was most likely intended to serve a purpose of finding friends, new and old, connecting and chatting with acquaintances, and having a personal space you can call your own and post pictures of great times and letting your friends know you are cramming for your next final. Facebook has been a great way to express yourself, but when the abuse starts, new groups against certain rights bring out voices from people who normally would not talk and certain “like” buttons could cause a whole bad day to go completely wrong because an enemy “liked” your status. In other words, privileges of Facebook have started to go downhill because our rights to speak our voice and have an opinion have started taking it to a new level. Facebook does not look for others feelings; it is a whole new world of violence, hatred, and hurtful words.

Certain pages of Facebook have a link where you can “Become a Fan,” basically showing that you like this aspect or this specific event. Although, there are plenty of non hurtful pages you can become a fan of, the matter of the fact is that, anyone can make a page and no one is monitoring how violent or what the intended actions are of the page. As much as some people think so, Facebook is not as protected and as safe as some people could argue. Of course you can contact the providers if you feel is necessary but who says they are actually going to take care of this situation? Even though they were the creators of Facebook, that doesn’t mean they can over see every aspect and every page one person in the world posts. This is where the legit problem comes into play. Little kids have Facebooks now, they are heavily influenced by the internet and depend on the information they receive through the different links. Not having a good source of protection over Facebook gets the trouble started when activities become real life.

Having known the certain troubles on Facebook, people can say it is just a simple way of stating your feelings or having fun. But when what you believe is all in fun, someone else might believe it is for real. Along with the incident in California, no one knew if the young boys who posted “Kick a Ginger Day,” were being real about it, but regardless, it was expressed in a public school by other young boys. This is where the line is crossed on Facebook.

Along the lines of Facebook not being a protective and reliable source, it also doesn’t restrict what is posted by any means. Anybody can post any type of video on Facebook now, and the content never has to be review or approved. There have been many cases where you can see people getting drunk and doing unrespectable actions that can eventually later get them caught and in trouble. Also, kids getting into fights have been posted for the whole world to view. Whether or not they think it’s okay to take the videos, but posting them on Facebook just shows that the site doesn’t serve as a protective site.

There should be some rules and regulations for the Facebook site regarding what types of videos can be posted and what type of Fan pages can be created. Just like YouTube, having a team of members whose responsibility is to oversee the whole site and look for unacceptable video posted and take them down. Of course they have the set agreement plan that you have to check the box if you oblige. But who reads this these days? For some people it is just another page of the process to even get a Facebook. Some possible solutions for this could be to just have a team who reviews all videos that get submitted onto Facebook. Also with the Fan pages, there needs to be a set of people who can work for Facebook and go through many of the sites that are created and monitor them as they come through.

Overall, Facebook could be known as an ongoing problem in our world today. Although we like to look at it as a new way to meet with old friends and to let the world know what we are up to these days, it can also get people in a lot of trouble. Voicing our opinions through the status’ we post, posting videos of our drunken underage friends, or even becoming a simple fan of a page that expresses negative views against another group of people or even an activity. We would like to think of Facebook as a simplistic website but the under tunnels of it are so much more complicated and has the world turning against it and realizing Facebook is not as secure and protected as they would like to think it is. It displays what our world is coming to these days and not in the good ways people would hope for.

Authorities think the beating of a 12-year-old redhead in California could be linked to a Facebook posting.
